Best known for her rich watercolors, Ransom Canyon, Texas artist Bettye Cook began her professional art career before graduating from Rice. She illustrated yearbooks, did fashion plates for the local paper and worked in medical illustration. After marrying, she and another Rice grad, Dave Cook moved to Lubbock, where he coached high school basketball.
Bettye spent several years as Art Director for Lubbock's NBC affiliate. She requested a crash course in animation from Walt Disney, and some of her animated ads can still be seen.
The Cooks raised their three children in Midland. (She's "Mom" to Old Spanish Trail Studio painter Lindy Cook Severns). Bettye pursued a teaching career during those years. She never gave up her art though, and she penned her customized cartoons to the delight of friends across Texas.
Originally an oil painter,
Bettye took up watercolors after moving to Ransom Canyon. She also painted a commissioned room-sized jungle mural (acrylics)in Midland, TX. Now she says she prefers a more manageable sized surface, painting without the aid of ladders and scaffolds.
Bettye's diverse subjects range from florals to landscapes to still lifes to figures.
The versitile artist is on the board of the Lubbock Watercolor Association. She is a founding member of the Ransom Canyon Splash Gals. Bettye exhibits in regional shows.
Bettye welcomes commissions for all types of art. Contact her through the studio.
