Portrait of A Female River in River Between the Lands

The lower Rio Grande is surely a female river, ever-changing in its faces and moods. On this December day, the Big River must've just finished a yoga class, because it was centered and serene, moving between cane breaks under a sky gentled with thinly draped clouds. I walked the sandbar, kicking up silica particles that sparkled color back at me. I listened to the faint whisper of water moving toward the Gulf in its own good time.

She, The River, agreed to let me paint her portrait from this, her good side. I call her large-ish pastel "River Between the Lands".

Kick your shoes off and walk in sparkling sand today, if only in your imagination. Small joys matter most.
