Commissions, Art Created for You

A commission is a custom artwork I create for an elite audience--YOU. It's a slow dance between artist and collector.

You share your vision, your memory, your color scheme and space requirements. I get to know you and see your subject from your eyes, then offer professional suggestions about materials and composition. We join hands. Then, I put your story into paint.

Step 1

You browse my originals to get a sense of pricing and mediums, then initiate a conversation about what you want.

Email is perfect for this. Attach photos, talk size, framing needs. Tell me stories. Anything that you think matters, matters to me.

As you look at the prices of originals on my site, estimate 10% more for a commission of a comparable size. I'll be dropping everything to work with you on your art!

Step 2

I consider your concept from my own perspective and schedule.

I prefer to work from my own photos when possible, but...

I won't accept subjects I don't feel a connection to! (No pickup trucks, snakes or whales. Although all those things are important to someone, I don't paint them.)

I won't put you in a long line, and will give you a realistic estimate of the time it will take to get your  art. I usually need 2 months, especially if we're framing it.

Step 3

I email you my thoughts on your artwork, including a very rough sketch, if applicable.

I give you a timeline.

I give you a firm price quote for the size we've been discussing, including framing (or not) and shipping, delivery or pick-up.

You can still revise the size (and thus, price) or make minor conceptual changes. We're dancing, remember? You can sometimes take the lead,

Step 4

You agree, and email me a "go ahead!

I email you a secure invoice for the total amount that can be paid online by credit card, PayPal or check.  Half is due immediately and is non-refundable. The balance is due when I notify you I've completed the artwork.

I go to work!

I send you photos throughout the process, btw. You may offer small changes or additions along the way --I'll do it if your changes are artistically feasible to incorporate.

HOMECOMING  36" x 22" pastel

A good summer on the ranch, a herd of black cattle and a windmill taking a rest while rain showers fill the tanks. This landscape adorns the businessman/rancher's office back in the city, so he can instantly return to his land and snatch some tranquillity even on the busiest day.

ANCHORED IN GOLD

6"x6" oil

Your old friend in Scotland is getting married and you can't be there. So you send a miniature of your favorite place in the Davis Mountains decked out in autumn, your favorite time of year.

I suggested painting this in oils on a cradled archival board. I painted the image around the edges of the gallery wrap board so it self-framed. That kept the size down for shipping internationally. Also, oils on boards are sturdy creatures for long distance travels.

I like to imagine this small painting glowing on his end table in the Scottish Highlands.

LIGHTING THE DARKNESS 16" x 12" pastel

The College of Arts and Sciences of Texas Tech University commemorated the beloved tradition, Carol of Lights on a special holiday greeting.

They envisioned something with the giant wreath that hangs on the old Sciences building each December. I remembered standing on that balcony, shivering as I sang carols my freshman year.

Their painting became an impressionistic  story about the coming together of students, faculty and community that adds joy to the world.

Description from Merchant:

We want Lindy Cook Severns art to last for generations. All prints, whether open editions or uniquely embellished remarques are done on with archival (acid-free, non-reactive) ink and papers and matted in acid-free matboard. Original art, from the smallest drawings and watercolors to the largest oils and pastel paintings are done on archival surfaces. Lindy uses the highest grade pigments in each medium. Light-fastness of pigments is further protected by covering all but all paintings in artist grade UV protective glazing, whether glass or acrylic. Conservation framing on original art means no reactive materials come in contact with the artwork, so all tape and backing boards are acid free and create a barrier for the artwork.
